Avastin is the trade name for Bevacizumab. Avastin is classified as a monoclonal antibody and anti-angiogenesis drug. Avastin (bevacizumab) is a cancer medication that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Avastin  is a drug that slows the growth of new blood vessels.

Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that blocks angiogenesis by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A).[2] VEGF-A is a chemical signal that stimulates angiogenesis in a variety of diseases, especially in cancer.

Bevacizumab is usually given intravenously every 14 days. In colon cancer, it is given in combination with the chemotherapy drug 5-FU (5-fluorouracil), leucovorin, and oxaliplatinor irinotecan. For treatment of eye diseases it is injected intravitreously.

How is Avastin Use

— Avastin is given through an infusion into a vein (intravenous, IV).  The first dose is given over 90 minutes.  The infusion time can eventually be shortened to 30 minutes if well-tolerated.

— The amount of avastin that you will receive depends on many factors, including your height and weight, your general health or other health problems, and the type of cancer or condition being treated.  Your doctor will determine your dose and schedule.
